Happiness Fundamentals, 3 of 3
Living happier is a function of two simple things:
- Changing how we spend our time and the actions we take
- Changing how we think and the decisions we make
On these two points, I believe there are some universal principles to living happier, which I’ve laid out in my Happiness Manifesto below. I hope it rocks your world!
Note: I’ve said it before, but humans, we’re complex creatures. So, this manifesto isn’t a three point fix-all. But be patient with it, be patient with yourself and miracles will happen.
For more thoughts on how to live happier, see my blog. It’s dedicated to distilling what experience has taught me into easily digestible and immediately applicable nuggets of knowledge; a curation of wisdom, inspiration and thought-provoking content.
Happiness Manifesto
I understand that I am entitled to happiness.
I understand that I alone am responsible for my happiness.
I will not let my actions, much less my happiness, be defined by the opinions of others (example).
I will not try to be someone I am not nor will I recalibrate my life to be perfect for someone else.
I will never resign myself to complaining or wishful thinking; if I don’t like something, I will either change my circumstances (i.e., act) or my perspective.
I will live in the moment.
I will honor my body.
I will appreciate actively everything I have.
I will take responsibility for my situation.
I will let go of anything that is not right for me and hold on to that which instinctually fills me with joy.
I will accept that people fundamentally do not change, so I will either accept them as they are or leave them behind (true change comes only if they themselves desire to change, not an external force).
I will not stress over things that I cannot control (instead, I will start contingency planning).
